Bears Don't Read is beautifully illustrated, with a wonderful story filled with persistence, friendship, and the delight of new beginnings. The ending highlights how learning to read opens the door to so many other things. This would be a wonderful addition to your home library!

I read this book to a class of 1st graders.  They were really able to connect with the bear :)

Of my recent book purchases, this one is best. The messages are good (desire to read, perseverance by the bear, kindness from the little girl & her mother), but I dislike the component of having the bear surrounded by police, shouting "Put your hands up!" and other yelling. In the end, the police chief becomes the bear's friend, and even reads poetry to him. I thought that was a nice touch. Still, the story lacks that magical quality that sweeps you in. It's not terrible... it's just that it's also not wonderful.

Wonderful addition to any child's library! The book is very large with full page illustrations which makes it a great'lap read'!

This story is sweet.  The bear just wants to be given a chance to pursue something different.  He decides he wants to learn to read.  The little girl and her mom are kind of like the good Samaritans in our society.  When everyone else is rude or ignorant, we need those people who are not afraid to offer help to someone who different from them.  I agree with an earlier review that says the story is lacking something magical that draws you in.  It is a good story.  But it could be better.

This is a very sweet message about learning to read, in an adorable bear-clad package.  My 4 year old and I are both in love!

My son fell in love with this book right away.  He loves George and Clementine.  He has jammies that have bears like George on them and refers to them as "George Jammies." The message about reading being tough, but persisting through is awesome for any beginning reader.  

My 4yo daughter has asked me to read this to her over and over.  In addition to the great memories we are making over this book, I LOVE the message this book has which is nothing is impossible if you TRY.  :)

This book is very cute. My daughter loves it and requests it often. The illustrations are adorable.

Lovely illustrations, beautiful story about being different, being yourself, and making your own choices. My three year old loves it, my husband and I love it, everyone we've read it around thinks it is great. This is one of the best Usborne titles.

My 3 year old daughter really likes this book and asks to read it all the time. It's perfect for bedtime. The book is very big but it has great illustrations and the story is really good.

Bears Don't Read is fantastic!  It teaches  love of literacy, defying prejudice, determination and helping others through this hysterical book!  My boys all join in at bedtime impersonating the police chief yelling "Bears Don't Read!".  Also, the illustrations are beautiful.  I can't say enough good things about this book, even my husband and I laughed out loud reading this one!    

This book was one of my first Usborne purchases and one of my favorites. I love how the bear didn't just settle with not learning to read because "bears don't read" - and I also love the message of kindness. This is a great book and one of the most charming books in our library.

This book is quite large, which makes the beautiful illustrations really pop. We started reading this with our son at age 1, and he still loves to hear about George the bear and his passion to learn to read.

I wanted to love this book, its size and photos, it's message, but I do not like this book, my son did not learn to 'want to read' after reading this.  With eight pages devoted to a black bear and a dozen white cops surrounding a bear that wants to read what kind of message are you portraying, it has nothing to do with learning to read. I like most usborne books, this one is terrible...

I thought this book would be charming.  HOWEVER, I am still trying to understand how police in riot gear yelling at a bear doesn't come off as jarring.  It was a very unexpected turn and completely distracts from the story.  No thanks.

My 8 yr old daughter gravitates towards picture books so I was super excited to get this one! However, there was nothing really special to it. I didn't understand the point of the book?? I could take it or leave it. There is a part where the police are yelling at the bear, I was just confused through the book.  

My absolute favorite book so far! My 5 year old grandson loves it also! It’s a fun read!

From the unusually large size of the book, to the gorgeous, fabric-like illustrations, to the enchanting storyline, Bears Don’t Read will not disappoint! It even appeals to a broad age range-depending on attention span, this books is perfect for 2-9 year olds!

This is a great story! My children are 3 & 5, we love story and great pictures!

My 2 year old daughter and 5 year old son adore this book.  It is my son's favorite at this time- he puts it in our pile of bedtime books every night.  I like how it portrays reading as a desired skill the bear wants to learn, as my son is currently learning how to read himself.  

I really want to love this book. It’s pictures are vivid, and it could be great for helping kids grow a desire to read. Unfortunately, I’m really disappointed in the role that police officers play, showing up in riot gear was scary and uncalled for (and not what happens when a bear enters a public setting). The little girl disobeying the officers doesn’t send a great message. Also, if you come from an area where bears are common, you wouldn’t want your child thinking bears are safe to be around.

We have read it together a few times but she really enjoys reading it on her own too. She loves exploring the magical relationship between the bear and the little girl. It's an adorable story.

My 8 yo just learned kindergarten sight words this year. The part in the book talking about the bear finding reading hard at first but it got easier stood out to her. She wanted to read it again! We have read it at least once a week since!

A must have addition to any home library. My kiddos absolutely love this book.

Cute premise, very questionable execution. We bought this as a Christmas gift for our daughter and opted not to give it to her. My two-year old doesn't need to see a circle of cops in riot gear surrounding someone, even if its a bear. Wish I'd read the reviews better before I bought it.

The bear finds and book and goes to town to find someone to teach him how to read. The town freaks out (everyone can understand the bear speaking) and the bear gets surrounded by the police. It was too much for a kids book in my opinion. Had a lot of cute potential and overall Good message which would encourage a kid to work to learn to read as the bear does but it just fell flat. Just good...not great.

I loved most of this book but the police scene came out of nowhere and killed the sweet, wholesome vibe of this book.  I now paper clip those pages and just skip them.  It's a shame bc the book is lovely otherwise but the police yelling at the bear was just random and too weird to not be distracting. It did actually upset my 3 year old bc they are just overly aggressive in the book.
